George Washington Carver once said, “I love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting system, through which God speaks to us every hour, if we will only tune in.” This seems to embody what many of us experience in the great outdoors — a unique connection with our Creator that inspires praise and gratitude for the beauty of creation. The opportunity to engage in outdoor worship while surrounding ourselves with God’s gifts of creation will amplify our experience in prayer or conversation. This unique experience of worshiping outside provides a space for congregation members to encounter nature, to realize that the holy is experienced outside of the sacred space of the sanctuary, and to connect worship with creation care.
Please join us for the Second Annual Outdoor Worship and Church Picnic on Sunday, September 29, at Quarry Lakes Recreation Area. We’ll gather at the North Ensenada Pavilion (to the right as you come in through the kiosk/gate). The unique worship service in natural surroundings will be held 10:15-11:30 a.m. with the picnic following. After lunch, feel free to stay as long as you like for an afternoon of recreation choices including: hiking, biking, walking, fishing (license and permit needed for those over 16), kites, touring the rare fruit tree grove, lawn games, and fellowship time with friends. Unfortunately, there is no swimming this year due to poor water quality. Remember to dress for the weather, your sunscreen, and your hat.
You will notice that the Ensenada Pavilions have picnic tables. If you don’t want to sit on picnic benches during the worship service, bring a camping chair, lawn chair, or picnic blanket. The service will include joyful singing and some interactive activities. We will not receive an offering during this service; you can give online via the church’s website.
The main dish and water will be provided for the picnic. Please sign up to attend and to bring a potluck dish (side, salad, or desert) to share. You will also want to bring your own chairs to the picnic site.
Carpooling to the park is encouraged, since there is a $5 per car entry fee. We will be forming carpools in the church parking lot between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. The carpools will receive $5 to cover the cost of parking. If your family happens to fill your car you can come by the church from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. and get your $5 parking fee on your way to the picnic. Many thanks to the generous NDC couple that has anonymously donated the funds for this gift.
Accessibility: The Ensenada Pavilions are wheelchair accessible.
