For more than 50 years, downtown Niles has hosted a large antique fair on the last Sunday in August. On that day, downtown Niles is closed to traffic, antique and food booths are set up, and hordes of people descend on the town.
Niles Discovery Church has a big flea Market in our own building at the same time. To prepare for the sale, our congregation and friends clean closets, garages, and storage places, then they donate the unused, but good items to the church. These wonderful treasures are marked, displayed, and sold in our Fellowship Hall. This year, the Niles Flea Market will be Sunday, August 26.
Starting July 23, you may begin bringing your unwanted treasures to the church on Sunday mornings, weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., whenever office staff is in the church, or by calling Alta Jo Adamson to arrange to open the church. Make sure everything is clean and in good working condition.
We accept tools, some books (See “Flea Market: Donating Books And More”), toys, games (with all the pieces), jewelry, hats, purses, musical instruments, china, glassware, antiques, tools, collectables, knickknacks, holiday decorations, linens, blankets, small appliances, patio accessories, office supplies, children’s toys, small furniture (that you could lift yourself), trunks, shoes, chairs, desks, exercise equipment, and sporting goods. You-name-it! What NOT to bring: clothing, sofas, large and heavy furniture, drapery rods, sinks and toilets, and soiled and non-working items.
We rely on your donations arriving EARLY so that members of the church, who are our own best customers, can shop and buy during the month of August! Plus, when there are at least two volunteers working on pricing and displaying (typically weekdays, 10:00-2:00), neighbors can shop, too. This is an important fundraiser for the church.
Which brings us back to “Fellowship.” All the people who volunteer to make this happen experience a wonderful dose of fellowship. Do you have a truck or van to help haul items to the church? Would you like to help price and sort merchandise? Volunteer to help out!
Volunteers are especially needed on Saturday, August 25 and Sunday, August 26, to work in two-hour increments throughout the day. Generally speaking, the whole congregation is needed to roll up their sleeves and pitch in, and it’s actually loads of fun! Add your name to the volunteer sign-up lists on the Fellowship Hall bulletin boards, or see Alta Jo Adamson to gather more information.
Worship plans for Flea Market weekend
A simple, meditative worship service is being planned by Pastor Jeff, Joy Barnitz, and Sandy Thomas for Sunday, August 26. Members and friends of the church are invited take a break for the energy and chaos of the Flea Market to remember that God is present through all of life’s energy and chaos.
