The Second Saturday Documentary Series returns to Niles Discovery Church, now in our new location (36600 Niles Blvd) this month – only this month and next, the documentaries will be screened on the third Saturday of the month. Screening time is 1:30 p.m.
This month, on May 16, we will screen two short films, “Backyard: The Film” and “Faith Against Fracking.”
“Backyard” examines four states that are presently in different stages of hydro-fracking development. The results are several powerful stories of people at odds with the natural gas extraction occurring around them. Interspersed throughout these human stories is an animated reminder to “step back” and look at the bigger picture.
“Faith Against Fracking” explores the inspirational story of the intersection of various communities around California, and our collective responsibility wean ourselves off of toxic fossil fuels and onto a truly clean energy economy. Together, the faith leaders in the film call on Governor Brown, as a person of faith himself, to ban these deleterious practices. Throughout the film, the faith leaders focus on a number of different ideas, each of which hold true across faith traditions, including stewardship of the planet and honoring the golden rule.
A discussion, led by Pastor Jeff Spencer, will follow the screening.
