The cantata Uns ist ein Kind geboren was originally performed on the first day of Christmas at St. Nikolaus Church in Leipzig, probably in 1720. Long considered to have been composed by J.S. Bach, the piece was recently reattributed to Kuhnau, who was Bach’s predecessor as music director at the churches of St. Nikolaus and St. Thomas. The cantata is scored for strings, woodwinds, organ, chorus, and soloists.
The text for the cantata is drawn from Isaiah 6, Psalm 69, free poetry by Erdmann Neumeister, and a hymn by Kaspar Füger. Jonathan Borchardt has translated the text into English, and the performance on December 21 will mark the premiere of this edition. The eventual publication will carry a dedication to Niles Discovery Church and be made available online to all at no cost.
